At street level, Beirut is constantly being negotiated. A pavement becomes a place to gather, an unused plot takes on a shared purpose, and the boundaries between public and private life shift through everyday actions. Presented at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, Beirut Shifting Grounds follows these ways of inhabiting a city through uncertainty. Within the collective research, the visualisation contribution brings cartographies, spatial models and urban histories into conversation, making different scales and moments readable together. Buildings and streets emerge through the decisions that shape them and the people who continue to adapt them. The work makes these acts of improvisation and solidarity visible as part of the city’s continuing construction.
